Before & Aftercare

Taking proper care of your new tattoo is crucial to ensuring it heals beautifully and retains its vibrancy. This overview provides essential guidelines for the first day, the healing process, and special considerations to keep in mind.

Tattoo Before Care

Preparing for your tattoo is just as important as the aftercare. Follow these tips to ensure your skin is in the best condition for your new ink:

  1. Moisturize Your Skin: Regularly apply a fragrance-free moisturizer to the area where you’ll be getting tattooed. However, do not moisturize or shave the area on the day of your appointment.

  2. Avoid Sunburn: Keep your skin protected from sun exposure. A sunburn can cause discomfort and delay your tattoo appointment.

  3. Get a Good Night’s Sleep: Rest well before your appointment. Being well-rested helps your body handle the stress of getting a tattoo more effectively.

  4. Eat a Healthy Meal: Have a nutritious meal before your tattoo session. This will help keep your blood sugar levels steady, reducing the chances of feeling lightheaded during the process.

  5. Avoid Alcohol and Blood Thinners: Refrain from drinking alcohol or taking blood-thinning medications (unless prescribed by a doctor) at least 24 hours before your tattoo. These can increase bleeding and affect the tattooing process.

  6. Wear Appropriate Clothing: Dress in loose, comfortable clothing that allows easy access to the area being tattooed. For example, if you’re getting a tattoo on your arm, consider wearing a sleeveless shirt or one with easily rollable sleeves. If it’s on your leg, wear shorts or pants that can be rolled up. Avoid tight clothing that might rub against the fresh tattoo afterward.

  7. Bring Entertainment: For longer sessions, bring something to keep yourself entertained, like a book, music, or a podcast.

By following these simple steps, you’ll be well-prepared for your tattoo session, helping to ensure the best possible outcome.

The First Day

  1. Leave the Bandage On: Your tattoo artist has carefully wrapped your tattoo to protect it from bacteria and dirt. Keep the bandage on for at least 2-4 hours, unless otherwise instructed.

  2. Gently Wash Your Tattoo: Once you remove the bandage, wash your hands thoroughly. Use lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free soap to gently clean the tattoo. Avoid scrubbing—just let the water run over the area and pat dry with a clean, soft towel.

  3. Apply a Thin Layer of aftercare cream available in studio:

  4. After washing, apply a thin layer of cream Do not apply too much; your skin needs to breathe to heal properly.

  5. Avoid Re-bandaging: Your tattoo needs air to heal, so please do not re-bandage it unless your given specific instructions to do so.

Healing Process

Your tattoo will go through several stages as it heals. Here’s what to expect and how to care for it during each phase:

  1. Days 2-3: Initial Healing

    • Your tattoo may still be red, swollen, and feel warm to the touch. This is normal.

    • Continue washing the tattoo gently when needed and applying a thin layer of aftercare ointment.

  2. Days 4-14: Peeling and Itching

    • Your tattoo will start to peel like a sunburn. Resist the urge to pick or scratch at the flakes.

    • Expect some itching, but avoid scratching as this can damage the ink.

  3. Weeks 2-4: Scabbing

    • Light scabbing is normal; do not pick at the scabs.

  4. Month 1+: Full Healing

    • By the end of the first month, most of the surface healing will be complete. However, the deeper layers of skin may continue to heal over the next few months.

    • Continue moisturizing the area and protect it from sun exposure.

Special Attention

To ensure your tattoo heals perfectly, keep the following in mind:

  1. Avoid Direct Sunlight: UV rays can fade your tattoo and cause damage during the healing process. Always cover your tattoo.

  2. No Swimming or Soaking: Avoid pools, hot tubs, saunas, and even long baths during the healing process. Submerging your tattoo in water can draw out the ink also exposing it to bacteria and prolonging the healing.

  3. Wear Loose Clothing: Tight clothing can rub against your new tattoo and cause irritation. opt for loose, breathable fabrics, especially in the tattooed area.
